Tension Headache

Renamed a tension-type headache by the International Headache Society  is the most common type of primary headache. The pain can radiate from the neck, back, eyes, or other muscle groups. Tension-type headaches account for nearly 90% of all headaches. It is reported 3% of the population has chronic tension-type headaches. Tension-type headache pain is often described as a strong pressure, as if the head were being squeezed. The pain is frequently present on both sides of the head at once. Tension-type headache pain is typically mild to moderate, but may be severe. Tension headaches commonly start at the top of the neck and back of the head but can continue around to the front of the head and eye region. Usually associated with prolonged poor sitting posture creating increased muscle tension and pressure on the upper joints of the neck and base of head.

Stress Headache

Stress headaches are usually similar to tension type headaches but the person also reports an associated increase in emotional stress leading up to the headache. Increased perceived stress adds to muscle tension and emotional overlay to symptoms. Cervicogenic (neck) Headache

This is a headache that is caused as a result of a neck problem which refers pain to the head. Your upper neck is connected to the Trigeminal Nerves through an area called the Trigemino-Cervical Nucleus (TCN) in your brain. In the picture here V1-V3 are from the Trigeminal nerves and C2-C4 are from the upper neck nerves.

 

Prolonged or repeated tension in the upper neck creates pain signals that can give you neck pain and also go through the TCN and give you head pain.
